Doodle workshop: The Legend of Buddha at Labuan

Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Labuan and spend a day with an energetic group of kids. The workshop was all about doodling the Legend of Buddha — blending culture, storytelling, and creativity into one fun session.

It was such a heartwarming experience. The kids were curious, excited, and full of imagination. As I shared the story, I could see their eyes light up — and when it came time to doodle, their creativity flowed freely onto the paper. Some drawings were whimsical, others were surprisingly deep, and each one was uniquely theirs.

For me, this trip was more than just teaching art; it was about showing how doodling can be a tool for learning, expression, and joy. And honestly, I had just as much fun as they did!

Why Doodling Benefits Kids 🎨

Teaching children to doodle isn’t only about making cute drawings — it comes with so many lasting benefits. Here are 5 I personally witnessed in Labuan:

  1. Boosts Creativity & Imagination
Doodling allows kids to turn thoughts into visuals. When we told the legend, they each imagined it differently — and their doodles became personal versions of the story.

  2. Enhances Focus & Listening Skills
As the kids doodled, they paid closer attention to the details of the story. The act of drawing kept them engaged and connected to what was being shared.

  3. Encourages Self-Expression
Some kids drew playful, quirky characters, while others leaned towards symbolic elements. Doodling gave them a voice beyond words.

  4. Reduces Stress & Builds Confidence
Drawing in a fun, judgment-free environment helped the kids relax. Every finished doodle brought smiles and boosted their confidence in their own abilities.

  5. Connects Culture with Creativity
By doodling the Legend of Buddha, the children not only learned about a cultural story but also expressed it in their own way — keeping tradition alive while adding a personal touch.

A Fun & Meaningful Trip 💙

The day in Labuan was filled with laughter, learning, and lots of doodles. The kids inspired me as much as I hope I inspired them. Seeing their excitement reminded me that art isn’t just about technique — it’s about connecting hearts, telling stories, and spreading joy.

I left Labuan with new memories, fresh inspiration, and a big smile on my face. Truly, it was a fun trip I’ll always treasure!
